Are you curious about Lazio? I agree: it’s wonderful and packed with art and history. But DIY your trip? It’s a risk, and here, I explain why.
The capital of the Lazio region is Italy’s biggest tourist draw: Rome. But are they as close when it comes to friendliness to tourists and travel planning?
You would think traveling around Lazio is as straightforward as going to Rome, right?
Think again!
Reaching Rome is easy from countless cities in Italy, Europe, and the world, but Lazio? Not so simple!
I have been touring the Lazio region on my own for years and I can safely say that it’s less easy than it seems at first sight. Even if it’s Rome’s region.
I mean, I come from Sardinia, a beautiful region that’s not exactly famous for the efficiency of its public transport, and when I arrived in Rome, I would have thought all but that its region wasn’t much more organized than mine.
Well, I was wrong!
From missing the right motorway toll booth to spending hours on public transport, I think I’ve experienced it all. Of course, you can explore Lazio on your own, but be prepared to plan properly, or you will just end up wasting time and, as a result, seeing less!

You don’t believe me?
I will give you some examples. Let’s say you don’t feel particularly confident driving in Italy and you’d rather use public transport.
You can easily reach Viterbo by train from Rome and the medieval quarter is really a short walk away from the train station. But if you want to visit the thermal springs? You will either need a local bus or a taxi. And what about the scenic “dying city” of Civita di Bagnoregio? A bus from Viterbo train station will take around an hour and 40 minutes, whereas by car, you can reach in 40 minutes.
And what about Bomarzo’s Park of Monsters? By car is around an hour and a half, while using public transport anywhere between 3 and a half hours and 4 and a half hours. Or you can opt for private day tours, which are not very frequent.

But this is not it…
Often, when traveling around without a proper plan, we had a hard time finding a restaurant with availability. Sometimes, because they just didn’t have enough supplies in the kitchen, even though they had empty tables, sometimes because they could just not take anyone who didn’t book.
Depending on where you visit in Lazio, everything needs to be planned and pre-booked!
This is why I crafted an all-inclusive 7-day tour to discover the wonders of Lazio
On this Lazio tour, you will have:
- a top-notch tour leader with you all the way
- all transfers included in a private vehicle with an experienced driver
- historians and archaeologists certified to show you around
- world-class 4-star hotel
- cooking class and winery tour in an all-women countryside haven
- ceramic workshop with a local artist, where you make your own plate
- and much, much more!
You won’t have to worry about anything; all the logistics are taken care of, the transfers, the restaurants, and the guided visits.
Fret not: you will also have some free time to wander by yourself to indulge in your shopping and create personal memories.
