Sardinia Longevity Tour – Find the Secrets to Healthy Living

About Sardinia’s Blue Zone, it has been said everything and its opposite. From the Cannonau red wine being the magical elixir to the local people forever fasting, everyone has something to add about this region of Sardinia that came to the spotlight for its high number of centenaries.

The truth is, there is not one single secret to Sardinian longevity. It’s actually a combination of several factors that are best understood where the magic happens.

As I always say, a trip to Sardinia is like no other trip because Sardinia is like no other destination.

Sardinia is intense, deep, and mesmerizing. In a word, Sardinia is magical.

Forget skyscrapers, forget traffic, forget crowds. But especially, forget towns and neighborhoods built and spruced up for the tourists. In Sardinia, especially this region where my tour will take you, everything is authentic and genuine.

Hiking the unspoilt mountains of the Supramonte, you won’t just stare at its dramatic peaks, but you will also witness the life the local shepherds have lived for hundreds of years, the environment they grew up in, the mountain huts, the hidden ancient necropolises, the native vegetation and wildlife.

This is where silence reigns supreme, where you can hear your thoughts, where you will learn about a very ancient and fascinating civilization that dates back far before the Romans, and where you will appreciate ancestral rituals the locals still perform daily, naturally becoming the custodians of our collective memory.

In Sardinia, you will discover and reconnect with your primordial self.

Day-by-day plan

DAY 1 – Ancient wonders and mild trekking to start our journey

On the first day, you will meet with your tour leader, driver and travel companion in the meeting point conveniently located and easy to reach in Olbia. From here, you will make your way to the first ancient site, a Bronze-Age well-temple built in the 13th century BC and in use until at least the 9th century BC. But this is only the first of the sacred places you will visit, because the day will continue to what’s known as a Giants’ Tomb, a well-preserved pre-Nuragic necropolis, and then a Bronze-Age stone tower, one of the famous Nuraghe Sardinia is dotted with. After enjoying a traditional lunch in a local farm, it’s time for some active sightseeing and the afternoon will carry on with some mild trekking to explore a karst spring and a Nuragic village in the stunning Lanaitho Valley.

DAY 2 – Mysterious ancient villages and aperitif in a local vineyard

On the second day, we will challenge ourselves with one of the most famous and spectacular treks in Sardinia: the stunning and mysterious Nuragic-era Tiscali village that we will reach trekking through a karst sinkhole created some 900,000 years ago. For lunch, you will be the exclusive guests of the local shepherds. In the afternoon, we can relax in a local vineyard where we will enjoy a delicious aperitif paired with the famous Cannonau red wine.

DAY 3 – Nature and local crafts in Sardinia’s Blue Zone

Today is another day spent in nature hiking through old-style shepherds’ huts and archaeological sites where we will be able to observe the local wildlife and vegetation of the challenging Supramonte mountain range. After lunch, we will learn everything about the artisanal way of crafting tapestries and fine textiles in the small town of Urzulei, while for dinner, we will treat ourselves to a traditional meal in one of the best restaurants of the area.

DAY 4 – Orgosolo between murals and bandits

On the fourth day, we are still inside Sardinia’s Blue Zone, specifically, in the town of Orgosolo, famous for its street art and its bandits. A local guide will tell us how, while bringing color to the town, Orgosolo’s murals bear witness to a century of shepherds’ and farmers’ life, culture, politics, resistance and fight against injustice. Our lunch will be with the local shepherds and in the afternoon, we will explore their wonderful forest.

DAY 5 – Culture and history between Nuoro and Oniferi

Today, we will spend the morning in the beautiful capital of the province, Nuoro, also known as Sardinia’s Athens because of the numerous intellectuals born here in the 19th and 20th centuries. A local guide will show us the city and the unmissable ethnographic museum (Museo del Costume), an important showcase of Sardinia’s agro-pastoral society, diverse culture, traditional clothing and local foods. In Nuoro, you can also enjoy some free time to wander around and have a light lunch before heading to the pre-Nuragic necropolis of Brodu in Oniferi, recently declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

DAY 6 – Mamoiada between ancient rituals and UNESCO sites

Our day will start with an engaging urban trekking to the discovery of the artisanal workshops of Mamoiada, the town famous for its ancient Mamuthones masquerade. After a traditional lunch, we will set off to explore the fascinating and mysterious pre-Nuragic necropolis of Istevene recently declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO. In the evening, we will learn how to make traditional specialties in a cooking class followed by dinner organized by the ladies of our agriturismo.

DAY 7 – In the heart of Sardinia’s Blue Zone

Our last day will be devoted to understanding what makes this region Sardinia’s Blue Zone and will take us to the world’s longest-lived town, Villagrande Strisaili. Our day will be spent in nature, forest bathing, and visiting the local scenic waterfalls. Lunch will be in a local farm where we will also enjoy a guided tour of the property’s woods and and private nuraghe! For dinner, we will treat ourselves to one of the region’s most exclusive restaurants and we will raise a glass to our time together exploring Sardinia’s wildest regions and one of the world’s Blue Zones.

DAY 8 – Back to Olbia

After breakfast, our driver will takes back to Olbia.

You would object:

What if I also want to visit Sardinia’s tourist draws?

Before or after the tour, from Olbia, you can visit the famous Costa Smeralda, book a boat tour, and see popular towns like Castelsardo and Alghero!

I’m here for culture, will I see that?

Absolutely! Sardinia is very rich in culture. You won’t find Baroque churches and Renaissance palaces because Sardinia has a completely different culture from any other Italian region. In Sardinia, you learn about a very ancient civilization and its relations with the other Mediterranean cultures, and you will find an ancestral way of living rooted in tradition and community.
